Manufacturing Engineer
£50,000 Package
Location - Tyneside, London or Staffordshire (Client is flexible)

My client is a rapidly expanding company within the high technology market of Electrical/Mechanical design, manufacture and assembly. They have made significant investment in new market sectors such as energy and have a large number of orders confirmed for 2012. They are looking for a dynamic engineer to join the team and make a real difference to operations and engineering.

Job Purpose

To manage and control the company's New Product Introduction function to deliver manufacturing strategies that consistently deliver a conforming product in line with the technical specification. Champion design for manufacture and challenge engineering department output to ensure all aspects of product design are consistent with the manufacturing strategy.

To direct and control the staff of the department to ensure that they are appropriately trained, motivated and carry out their responsibilities to the required standard.

Approves design to ensure the product can be manufactured and conducting manufacturing capability studies.

Ensure that Manufacturing Data Packs / Standard Operating Procedures are in place for all Electrical Machines products & development to best practice standard.

In conjunction with the production manager define the all new facilities and or equipment required to introduce a new product into the manufacture along side defining the required performance metrics.

Work closely with the engineering design team to ensure that the all future designs can be manufactured in a controlled consistent manner inline with the manufacturing strategy of the company.

Be the champion of the Value Added & Value Engineering processes to collectively with engineering identify where improvements can be made in designs to ease the manufacturing and cost reduction.

Advise the business on best practice for design for manufacture.

Liaise with suppliers to ensure that we define a product that can manufactured in an efficient, controlled manner whilst meeting the required tolerances.

Engage with both internal manufacturing functions and external partners to ensure that the best / most appropriate manufacturing processes are being implemented.

Manage the interface between production and other departments to ensure all resources are available at the right time, cost and quantity to ensure smooth transition from the design phase into the manufacturing phase for new products.

Work with the production manager introduce processes that generate measures and metrics that enable good control at the manufacturing process.


Essential: BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or a manufacturing related subject.

Essential: Lean Practitioner, Continuous Improvement practices

Essential: Previous experience of introducing design for manufacturing principals into a business. A number of years of experienced within in a business related the manufacture of electrical machines / wound components, / high precision machining. Line management experience

Desirable: Previous production engineer experience in a high tech, low/medium volume environment
