Poles Leaving Ireland
Poles, constituting the largest ethnic minority in Ireland, are leaving the host country in increasing numbers.
In the first quarter of 2008, the number of Polish immigrants registered in Ireland dropped from 19,000 to 12,000, which is approximately a 40 per cent decrease compared with the same period a year ago, informs the Irish news portal Independent.ie.
The improving economic situation in Poland, strong Polish currency and the economic slowdown in Ireland are the main stimulants for the Polish workforce in Ireland to make a decision to go back home in the opinion of Jacek Rosa from the Polish Embassy in Dublin.
‘The Irish economy is growing at two per cent per annum, instead of five to six per cent in the previous year’, Jacek Rosa has explained.
The report comes in the wake of similar statistics from the UK. Statistics show that only 38,680 Poles signed up to the UK Home Office register of migrant workers in the third quarter of 2007, down 18 per cent from the previous year. (IAR) (mj)
